Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy

Nearly every little girl dreams of being a Disney Princess.  For some girls it was Snow White, while for others it was Cinderella.  For me, I wanted to be Ariel so badly.  Maybe it was a product of growing up in Florida, 5 minutes from the beach, that made me dream of being a mermaid – and one with red hair that could sing?!  Amazing.  Either way, as a kid, I personally went through three (yes 3!!) VHS tapes of “The Little Mermaid” because I watched the movie so many times.  I can still clearly remember the scene where all of her sisters were singing, and then Ariel was missing.  And I bet I could still sing every word from every song from that movie.

Starting tomorrow (Thursday, 10.22.09) night, Disney on Ice will be at the Rose Quarter through Sunday (10.25.09).  Times are as follows:

  • Thursday & Friday – 7:30pm
  • Saturday: Noon, 3:30pm and 7:00pm
  • Sunday: 1:00pm and 4:30pm

dsc01398The performance will feature four Disney stories including CARS, The Little Mermaid (YES!!), The Lion King, and Tinker Bell.  Each night, an hour before the show, there will be a Disney Princess Pre-Show. You should arrive up to one hour early to tour our dazzling display of gorgeous gowns.  This is complimentary to all ticket holders.  Tickets can be purchased here, at the Rose Quarter Box Office, participating TicketsWest/Safeway locations or by calling 977.789.ROSE.

We are currently offering a CyberClub discount for Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy, like we do with many shows that come to the Rose Quarter (join the CyberClub e-mail list here).  You can save $5 on the $17 and $21 tickets using the discount/promo code: SIMBA while purchasing tickets.

Fear & FrightTown

So, from previous posts, we can deduce that I work here at the Rose Quarter.  It’s myself and my co-worker that work closely together; we make videos, post blogs, create contests and promotions, as well as keep you guys updated on what’s going on at the Rose Quarter.  We do other things too, of course, but this is a huge portion of our job.

Yesterday, I was working with some TV crews who were getting footage of FrightTown for their Friday evening newscasts.  In the afternoon, I watched them tape some footage of the FrightTown crew get their makeup done, stood by while they interviewed Baron Von Goolo, and followed as they entered the haunted houses with some of the lights on.  I got to meet the “monsters” as people simply in makeup before FrightTown opened last night, including a conversation with what I can describe best as a “pig-man/mechanic,” who I couldn’t even look at when he had his mask on.  This stuff I could handle with ease, although I really am quite chicken when it comes to haunted house and things of this sort.

I’d been down to FrightTown before during the day, while they were building the houses and constructing the costumes.  The amount of work that has gone into this is amazing, not to mention the quality of construction and performances easily rivals any other haunted house or attraction that I’ve personally visited.  I’m from Florida, so Halloween Horror Nights (at Universal in Orlando) was a yearly tradition for my friends and I.  FrightTown was equally as impressive (if not more, in my own opinion) than anything I ever saw at Universal.

I teased my co-worker playfully, telling him that he needed to get some footage of the haunted  houses for us to use in a Rose Quarter video.  He said, “Absolutely not.”  Neither of us had the courage to go into these haunted houses in the dark, let alone get the experience of us screaming like children on film.  I was busy working with another TV station, so I did what I could to convince him that he needed to do this.  He said, again, “Absolutely not.”  We laughed over this for a bit and then went our separate ways over the span of a city block that FrightTown covers.  The station I was working with got their cuts with Baron Von Goolo that they needed, and then proceeded to move into the haunted house for some footage.  All I can think is, oh man, now I have to go in with them (karma for teasing my co-worker).  The sweet on-air personality that they had sent to do the reporting was also clearly thinking the same thing, I think her concrete grasp around my wrist was what gave it away.

I have never been so scared in my entire life.  I think the worst part was screaming and then realizing that the “monsters” I had just spoken to a few hours earlier were the ones that scared me.  The main thing I hear from people when I talk to them about FrightTown is their fear that it will be “cheesy” and not scary.  This is so far from true.  These people who work at FrightTown have so much passion for what they’re doing that it would be impossible for them to give  a less than stellar performance.

Anyone who is interested in haunted houses and terrifying experiences should definitely check this out.  For more information about dates and times, visit FrightTown.com.  For updates, contests, and tweets follow @FrightTown or @RoseQuarter or add the Rose Quarter as a friend on Facebook.

Inspired by bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and KISS, Slipknot is proving to have the longevity of the bands they emulate.  Des Moines native, the band Slipknot is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.  On 9-9-09 the band released a special edition of their self-titled debut album on Roadrunner Records.  The commemorative CD/DVD includes rare demos, remixes, rare B-sides and much more.

Part of the band’s appeal is that all of the members look like they are part of a freak show or carnival.  In an interview that concertlivewire.com did with lead drummer Joey Jordison, he states that the masks are reflective of how they feel.  Joey also said that they won’t ever de-mask as long as the band exists.

Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor, sometimes known by his number 8, will be taking over the KUFO airwaves today at 3pm and will decide what music to play!  Don’t miss the live webcast from the KUFO Studio.

Slipknot marks their 10th Anniversary with the show tonight at the Memorial Coliseum.  Tickets are on sale now and are priced at $45.00.  Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at the Rose Quarter Box Office (M-F 10a-5p), all participating Safeway/ TicketsWest outlets, by calling 877.789.ROSE (7673), or at ComcastTIX.com.

What’s Happening – Week of 10.12.09

This week at the Rose Quarter we have Slipknot ft Deftones (Tuesday, 10.13.09, 8pm at the Memorial Coliseum) and STAR WARS: In Concert (Wednesday, 10.14.09, doors open at 6pm at the Rose Garden).

Now, I must confess, I’ve never seen a single Star Wars movie in my life -  I could pick Chewbacca out of a crowd though.  With this in mind, I can now also confess that I am super excited about STAR WARS: In Concert.  After watching other YouTube videos about it (see the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AL8MDmQitU) and checking out pictures from other shows (From the Honda Center in LA – http://www.laweekly.com/slideshow/view/28521841 ) I realized that this isn’t just an orchestra playing, and it’s not just a movie showing.  This is going to be a full-on spectacle.
